Water: Good to Drink, Good to Grow

It's interesting to talk about the benefits of water, especially when discussing how it helps the human body when consuming it. But apparently it's also very good for the fruits and vegetables we enjoy, and may provide a sustainable solution to the earth's ever growing food vs. population problem. Dr. Gail Barnes. Ph.D with the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada is among a team of researchers who found that if the global population followed the United States Department of Agriculture's dietary guidelines, there would not be enough land to provide the food required. She joined Tonia on this edition of Food Talk for Health, and stressed that hydroponic farming, the method of growing plants in nutrient-rich water rather than soil, may be the future solution.  That's because land and chemicals are not needed, 80 percent less water is used (compared to agriculture), and plants can grow twice as fast.

Dr. Barnes told Tonia that it’s a misconception to think all vegetables need soil for nutrients; that actually vegetables grown in the sea can have more concentrated nutrition than those grown on land. Foods like seaweed and algae have long been considered to encourage longevity, prevent disease and promote beauty and health. Barnes says there are three superfood vegetables found in the sea that promote a health, longevity and sustainability (including: seaweed, sea lettuce and sea moss). She says there are many benefits to setting up your own hydroponic garden at home to grow vegetables, herbs and fruits in any weather condition (including: strawberries, mint, spinach, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, kale and more).
